Manuka is a shrub. A relative of the tea tree, it grows wild in the uninhabited regions of New Zealand. For centuries, the honey that bees collect from Manuka bushes has been used by the Tohunga, the Maori healer.

The beneficial properties of honey have been recognized for a long time. The quality of Manuka honey and the difference to other honey can be seen in the antibacterial activity of Manuka. This is indicated by the MGO content in mg/kg. MGO stands for Methylglyoxal, the main ingredient in Manuka.
