Lactose intolerance is caused by a lack of or too low lactase activity and means that the milk sugar (lactose) ingested through food cannot be digested optimally. In people who have problems digesting lactose, lactase improves lactose digestion. The enzyme breaks down the milk sugar in the small intestine into its components glucose and galactose, because only simple sugars can be absorbed by the intestine. This makes foods containing lactose easier to digest. If there is a lactase deficiency or if lactase activity is too low, lactose enters the large intestine where it is decomposed by the bacteria living there.
There are differences in lactose tolerance. The personal lactase requirement depends on the body's own lactase production and the amount of lactose ingested through food and can therefore vary from person to person. The number of tablets to be consumed with a meal containing lactose should therefore be based on individual needs.
Milk and dairy products contain important nutrients for a healthy diet. When using Doppelherz Lactase 4.500 it is not necessary to do without these products. In people who have problems digesting lactose, lactase improves the digestion of lactose. The enzyme breaks down lactose and makes foods containing lactose more digestible.
